Why Subtlety Rogue?
Subtlety Rogue is one of the strongest melee specializations in the game throughout the Cataclysm expansion. Rogue has an exceptional toolkit for control, burst, team utility, and defensives, making this specialization stand out from others.
Starting with their control, Rogues have Cheap Shot, Kidney Shot, and Gouge. Blind and Sap synergize relatively well together as a target can be sapped out of a Blind for additional Crowd Control, since combat falls on the target during the Blind duration. Other control abilities, Garrote and Dismantle, will be used to extend a CC chain when setting up on their opponents.
Next, they have Vanish, Evasion, Cloak of Shadows, and Combat Readiness, as their primary defensive spells. Subtlety Rogues also use Recuperate and Improved Recuperate for a passive HoT and damage reduction. Lastly, Preparation is a very important cooldown to use correctly, as it refreshes a majority of their utility and defensive cooldowns. This allows for multiple uses of Smoke Bomb and Vanish during a game.
This specialization provides massive team utility, which includes Tricks of the Trade to increase the damage of their allies, as well as using Crippling Poison to snare enemies. Subtlety Rogues also synergize Crippling Poison with Shiv, providing instant application to reduce uptime on their opponents. Also, Subtlety Rogue has Wound Poison, which is a 25% healing reduction when applied on the target. This debuff does not stack.
For compositions, Subtlety Rogue has a variety of classes that work well with them in Cataclysm, making them very versatile out of most specializations in the game. The best specializations to play with are Marksmanship Hunters, Frost and Fire Mages, Shadow Priests, and Affliction Warlocks in 3v3, preferably with a Discipline Priest or Restoration Shaman.
