Why Elemental Shaman?
Elemental Shaman in Cataclysm is bit more straightforward than in Wrath of the Lich King, especially since your primary damaging and builder spell, Lightning Bolt, can be castable while moving with the Glyph of Unleashed Lightning. Although Elemental Shamans suffer with the lack of defensives with the removal of Astral Shift, this can make this specialization more vulnerable than most specializations, but don’t let this be the deciding factor of playing this spec in PvP.
Elemental Shamans are mainly a hybrid-based specialization, allowing them to throw out some Healing Stream Totems and Healing Surges on allies or themselves to help their team recover quickly. Let’s not forget about Elemental Shamans having one of the most powerful and unpredictable burst windows on opponents, and their utility to keep them away from danger as long as possible.
For their defensive utility, Elemental Shamans tend to lack a bit in this department, but have Nature’s Guardian and Ancestral Resolve to help mitigate some pressure while allowing them to continue ramping up for their burst. Elemental Shamans also have the opportunity to play Glyph of Elemental Mastery, making their major offensive cooldown have some defensive utility when active. This can help Elemental Shamans play as the aggressors during moments where they want to secure a kill.
Let’s turn our attention to how Elemental Shamans deal damage in arena. What they focus on the most is optimizing their burst and increasing the opportunity for burst windows. Most of their damage comes from Flame Shock, and from their filler spell, Lightning Bolt, to ramp up their Lightning Shield charges. Flame Shock is important to constantly be applied not only for the damage, but for the cooldown reset and guaranteed crit with Lava Burst, as this will allow you to throw out your biggest damage dealing spell when available.
Their burst is centered around having maximum stacks of Lightning Shield, as this allows Elemental Shamans to spike down their opponents unexpectedly with their instant cast Earth Shock and Elemental Mastery. Having maximum stacks of Lightning Shield is crucial to maximize burst, as this affects the talent, Fulmination, to consume extra stacks as added damage into Earth Shock.
Their damage can be completely unpredictable to most players, and with their Mastery having a chance to duplicate their instant cast Lava Burst from Elemental Mastery, this could be lights out for most victims unable to instantly react to the incoming burst.
