Why Frost Mage?
Frost Mage is a specialization that provides stronger direct, coordinated burst damage on targets. This specialization is considered one of the most powerful casters in Cataclysm, and will grow in strength with more additions to PvE gear. What makes Frost Mage so valuable is due to their diverse toolkit, which includes multiple methods of control, tactical burst damage, and versatile utility. We will further discuss why Frost Mage is a great spec to main for Cataclysm Season 9.
For their control, a majority of this will be provided by their snare and root effects. Frostbolt, as your primary single target damaging spell, applies a snare effect to your target, making it easier to kite away after applying direct damage. Also, Cone of Cold applies a powerful snare and root effect when using the talent, Improved Cone of Cold. This will allow you to snare and root targets directly in front of your character, which can be used to kite opponents, or to use Deep Freeze to initiate kills. Lastly for snares, Frostfire Orb will be your primary generator for Fingers of Frost and to AoE snare targets.
Frost Mages also have a diverse selection of how they can choose to control a target. Deep Freeze, a spell unique to Frost Mage, allows them a Crowd Control initiator to immediately control their enemies. This can be used on the kill target for more Frost damage, or to assist with landing Ring of Frost or Polymorph on enemy healers. Frost Mages also receive the talent, Impact, giving you a chance to use your next Fire Blast as a mini stun. Using this effectively can assist stopping casts, and to peel opponents during crucial moments.
Their damage is primarily centered around single target burst to their opponent, resulting in more of a coordinated and tactical playstyle. First, it’s important to maximize your burst damage by attacking into Frozen targets. This is because the talent, Shatter, increases the Critical Strike chance of your damaging spells when your target is frozen. Also, Mages want to make sure their Frostbolts are empowered by Shatter, resulting in Mages using their pet Freeze ability while casting. Using Frostfire Orb at correct times can also enhance your damage during kill windows since it provides Fingers of Frost procs. These can be used for extra Ice Lance damage or to use Deep Freeze on non-frozen targets.
Lastly, it’s important to discuss Frost Mage utility, which involves the ability, Cold Snap, to reset all Frost spell cooldowns. This utility spell can be used both defensively and offensively, depending on the composition that is being faced. Against most compositions, using Cold Snap to reset Ice Block will be top priority. If you play or face compositions where you may not be the kill target, using this spell to reset your Deep Freeze, Frost Nova, and Icy Veins, can provide more control and damage throughput to score kills against your enemies.
