Why Balance Druid?
Balance Druid in Cataclysm Classic is most notably known as a specialization that provides extremely powerful frontloaded damage, which is primarily due to their DoT effects from Moonfire and Sunfire. Adding in a couple Starsurges into the rotation, Balance Druid is capable of providing unexpected instant cast burst on enemy players when affected by the Eclipse damage modifier. What makes Balance Druid struggle is the lack of sufficient survivability to enable this specialization to play as the aggressor, making this spec performed more defensively to avoid death during arena matches. Overall, this specialization will be a promising contender in PvP throughout the Cataclysm Classic expansion.
For their primary damage rotation, a majority of Balance Druid’s spells revolve around landing instant cast spells. Although having Moonkin Form assists with the removal of pushback effects, it is still difficult to stand still and cast extra Wraths in your rotation. Since Balance Druid only has Barkskin and Bear Form in their defensive toolkit, this specialization requires careful decision making in terms of their positioning for when to cast damaging or control spells. Boomkins typically play to survive while weaving in Moonfires consistently for on-demand damage from the talent, Lunar Shower.
Their offensive cooldowns involve more AoE spread pressure from Starfall, allowing Boomkins to maintain pressure on all targets throughout a game. This can help open the door to other kill opportunities from Boomkin DoT effects on all targets.
Overall, this specialization requires a lot of situational awareness in order to make good decisions in competitive PvP combat.
