Why Fire Mage?

Fire Mage, out of all specializations, focuses more on RNG crit and Shatter, making them a slot machine class for powerful burst damage. This specialization ends up becoming one of the strongest ranged specializations throughout Cataclysm, which is primarily due to their versatile toolkit. Their toolkit includes multiple methods of control, roll of the dice burst damage, and powerful defensive utility. We will further analyze what makes Fire Mage a great option for Cataclysm Season 9.

Looking at their methods of control, Fire Mage is granted a diverse selection of how they can choose to control a target. Dragon’s Breath, a spell unique to Fire Mage, allows them a Crowd Control initiator to immediately control their enemies. This can be used to peel targets off themselves or allies, or to assist with landing Ring of Frost or Polymorph on enemy healers. Fire Mages also receive the talent, Impact, giving you a chance to use your next Fire Blast as a mini stun, and spreads additional Fire DoT damage to nearby targets. Using this effectively can assist stopping casts, and to peel opponents during crucial moments.

Their damage is unique when compared to any other specialization. Although their damage primarily consists of DoT effects from Living Bomb, Pyroblast DoT, Ignite, and Impact, their burst consists of using Shatter at proper times. This is done especially for preparing Combustion, which spreads a massive additional DoT onto your opponents. Increasing the chance of their Fire Blast, Scorch, and Pyroblast to crit makes Fire Mage a deadly specialization, and is more lethal without Healers prioritizing their dispels for Fire Mage DoT effects.

This specialization’s defensive toolkit is not as powerful as Frost Mage, but offers considerable control with Polymorph and Dragon’s Breath, while also considering their snares and root effects from Cone of Cold or Frost Nova. Also, having the ability, Blink, to remove stuns from themselves, while also providing them some distance from melee specializations, makes it difficult to maintain uptime on them.
