What’s New for Subtlety Rogues in The War Within?

Entering into the new expansion, Subtlety Rogue continues to fulfill its role as a control-based specialization. We naturally prioritize massive burst onto their selected kill target, while also weaving in Step Kicks, Shadowy Duel, and off Crowd Control, which by itself drastically opens up potential kill windows.

A majority of what’s new for this spec focuses on our new Hero talent trees, but before we go in depth, it’s important to acknowledge the new additions we notice in both our Rogue and Subtlety talent trees. Starting off in our Rogue tree, we now have Without a Trace here, replacing where Shadow Dance used to be back in Dragonflight. We also experience some drastic buffs towards Subterfuge, as this is now a 6 second duration whenever we come out of Stealth.

Directing our attention onto the Subtlety talent tree, now have a massive change on Premeditation, as this now allows us to generate full combo points after using one of our combo generator abilities whenever we exit out of Stealth or enter into Shadow Dance. Additionally, we now have some convenient buffs connected to our Invigorating Shadowdust, resulting in us reducing our Rogue cooldowns by 22 seconds after using Vanish.

Since we now know all the new changes onto our Rogue and Subtlety talent trees, the most notable change comes with our newly added Hero talents, as Subtlety Rogues receive the option to choose either Deathstalker or Trickster. In the current meta, your default Hero tree will be Deathstalker, as this provides so many quality of life improvements to our arsenal of cooldowns and spells that we don’t really want to lose out on it. Trickster on the other hand may increase in representation if Deathstalker experiences more nerfs, but as it currently stands this isn’t necessarily the case.

As for our centerpiece node in Deathstalker, we receive Deathstalker’s Mark, acting as a potent debuff we can apply on our target directly after using Shadowstrike from either out of Stealth or with Shadow Dance. Your selected target you used Shadowstrike on will receive three stacks of this debuff, and when we use one of our damaging finishers, mainly Eviscerate, on a target with this debuff active, we consume one for some added direct burst damage. Alongside this, we receive a buff onto our next Backstab or Shadowstrike by 50%, further solidifying our kill potential during our setups.

We also receive our capstone node from this tree, Darkest Night, providing you more ways to play around optimizing your single target burst, as we receive a 19% damage buff, which has due to this damage modifier being nerfed in PvP combat, and a guaranteed crit from our next Eviscerate after consuming all three stacks of Deathstalker’s Mark off our primary target.

Overall, Subtlety Rogue in its current state seems to be the most promising, compared to our counterpart Rogue specs, as we begin our journey into The War Within. You’ll more likely to play as the aggressor as our current default loadout, constantly remaining under fire while looking to create setups and win conditions.
