What’s New for Holy Paladins in The War Within?

As we enter into the new expansion, Holy Paladin experiences some massive changes that alter their gameplay and playstyle. The most notable change is their dramatic buffs towards their instant cast healing, primarily Holy Shock. This allows them to play more as the aggressors in any composition, making them feel more forgiving of a spec when they push in and initialize Crowd Control setups, diverting away from the typical defensive playstyle all Paladins have been accustomed to in Dragonflight.

What makes this spec a complete game changer is from our new addition in our Holy talent tree, Rising Sunlight, acting identical to our original Daybreak cooldown, but rather is tied to Divine Toll and Avenging Wrath. This gives Holy Paladins more variability on when we want to heal with Holy Shock, and increases the amount of healing we provide drastically, making our reliable burst healing and consistent throughput so much more stronger. Outside of this talent, we have experienced a massive revamp to both our talent builds, giving us different node positioning and talent point allocation than we are originally used to.

The most dramatic change to our toolkit revolves around the main focal point of The War Within, Hero talents, which include Herald of the Sun and Lightsmith for Holy Paladins. Thankfully, you won’t have to rely on Hero talent swapping, as our Herald of the Sun build is currently our default build that we will rarely switch out of.

For Holy Paladins, Herald of the Sun provides us with the new ability, Dawnlight, giving us a stackable heal or damage-over-time effect that is applied to your target from your next two Holy Power spenders after using Barrier of Faith, and to nearby enemies and allies when activating Avenging Wrath. Dawnlight also then radiates a portion of its healing or damage to nearby allies or enemies. Additionally, while Avenging Wrath is active, you become linked to any active Dawnlights, dealing significant damage or healing to any enemies or allies that pass through them.

Not to mention, this Hero tree now provides Blessing of An’she for your periodic healing spells to proc a buff that increases your healing or damage output from Holy Shock by triple the amount, which can be a life-saver if procced at the right moment.

Overall, Holy Paladin seems to be a strong healer in the competitive scene, as their abundance of instant cast healing makes their team way less susceptible to death, especially if they rotate their defensive trades as efficient as they can.
