What’s New for Frost Mages in The War Within?

As we enter into The War Within, Frost Mages continue to maintain a similar toolkit they originally had back in Dragonflight. The only changing factor is that we now experience some new additions to both our class and spec talent trees, offering a bit more change in both our rotation and how much utility we have.

For our Mage class tree, our most notable change is that Ice Nova is now a choice node with one of our most powerful methods of Crowd Control, Ring of Frost. Since our specialization revolves around gaining value out of Shatter, we are forced to pick Ice Nova for supplemented burst, resulting in less variance in the way we control our opponents. Another massive change worth noting is our new talent, Barrier Diffusion, for some solid cooldown reduction every time a barrier effect breaks.

We also experience changes to our Time Anomaly talent, as we now receive Brain Freeze procs for more ways to apply Shatter, and a Water Elemental every time we periodically gain Icy Veins. This gives us our pet Freeze ability for a limited time, exceeding the limits on how much this spec can frequently burst with Shatter.

Entering into the hero talent trees, we only have one tree viable in PvP, Frostfire. This Hero tree focuses on providing players more ways to deal damage outside of our typical Ice Lance and Glacial Spike spells, as the centerpiece in this tree revolves around the talent, Frostfire Mastery, buffing our Haste from Fire damage, and Mastery from Frost damage, respectively. These are referred to as Fire Mastery and Frost Mastery. You’ll also be stacking your Fire Mastery a bit different than in PvE, making this more reliant on your PvP talent, Ring of Fire, for some periodic fire damage on any target walking through it.

A majority of our talents built into this Hero talent tree rely on building a maximum of six stacks on either one or both of these secondary stat modifiers. One of our core Hero talents that’s greatly affected by this is Frostfire Bolt, replacing our Frostbolt to periodically deal solid burst while also allowing us to generate Fire Mastery and Frost Mastery simultaneously. In PvP, you won’t be hard casting this ability as much, and are more reliant on your procs from Frostfire Empowerment, giving it some instant cast action and a solid damage buff.

Overall, this spec seems to be quite deadly in competitive play, as you have an abundance of snares and roots to make the specialization feel extremely fluid, regardless of what composition you play as. You’ll receive in more ways with delivering burst as opposed to previously in Dragonflight, making this spec feel great in most scenarios.
