What’s New for Discipline Priests in The War Within?

As we enter onward into the new expansion, a lot of changes have undergone our way, and Priests are no exception to this. Focusing on their talent changes, our class talent tree is the only one where we notice some new spells mixed in, especially Phantom Reach. This talent assists us with avoiding enemy control, while also making ourselves less likely to be a vulnerable target, as we can heal and deal damage at a further distance.

Starting with the bread and butter of The War Within, we have our Hero talents, giving us two completely new trees inside of our talent pane that give us a more exciting playstyle. For Discipline Priests, we receive Oracle and Voidweaver, which the latter is considered more exclusive in 2v2 and RBG settings where you want to pump the damage charts and create massive pressure. Oracle, on the other hand, is our recommend pick as it strengthens our healing spells with more flavorful utility, which makes it less likely for us to fall behind on our momentum.

Focusing our attention on Oracle, we receive our hallmark talent, Premonition. Not only is this talent quite similar to Paladin’s Blessing of the Seasons, as it cycles through spells in it’s own specific fashion, we make our overall healing a bit easier to manage, and depending on which one you use, they may require a bit more thought to fully benefit out of it.

First, we start off with Premonition of Insight for a 7 second cooldown reduction on your next three spells, making it extremely versatile in terms of how you choose to use this. In most cases, once you apply Atonement on the enemy’s kill target, you’ll want to reset the cooldown on both Penance, to benefit out of Weal and Woe to increase our Power Word: Shield absorption, and Power Word: Shield, alternating between them to dish out optimal healing. You may also consider using this on Purify against Mages, Eles, and Warlocks to constantly get rid of Crowd Control in game-winning moments, or to minimize debuff uptime on yourself and allies.

Followed by Premonition of Insight, we have Premonition of Piety for some nice buffs to our healing when active, and in combination with one of our new talents, Divine Providence, we have an additional charge, allowing us to combo Premonition of Piety with Power Word: Radiance to make the most out of it. This is mainly due to Premonition of Piety giving us bonus splash healing from targets affected by overhealing.

Lastly, we have Premonition of Solace for a non-purgeable shield on any target you heal, and Premonition of Clairvoyance, allowing you to use all three at once.

Overall, Discipline Priest continues to fulfill its role as a tempo-based healer, meaning that you’ll want to constantly keep your teammates healthy by constantly throwing out huge Power Word: Shields from Weal and Woe, while also weaving in Pain Suppression, Rapture, and Barrier so you can occasionally dish in more damage and overwhelm the opposing team. From what we receive now in our Hero talent pane, this makes our healing a bit easier to manage, making our rotation feel more fluid and impactful in the arena.
