What’s New for Assassination Rogues in The War Within?
Entering the new expansion, Assassination Rogue has received some slight variance in terms of their selection of talents and how we deliver our damage. In terms of its identity, this remains in tact as we continue to focus around multi-dotting to deal the most rot damage possible while weaving in some massive single target burst with Deathmark and Shiv. This gives us best of best worlds as a Rogue, making our rotation feel straightforward when multi-dotting and dealing burst without fully embracing the complex setup aspect.
In terms of what is changed, in our Rogue tree we experience the removal of Shadow Dance, which slightly reduces our burst potential, but to compensate for this change we receive Without a Trace in substitution for this node, granting us two Vanish charges instead. Since our Subterfuge node above has made it last 6 seconds instead of 3, we can spread out our Garrote a bit easier, as they have no cooldown while Subterfuge is active, and are empowered by Improved Garrote during this window.
Now, for our most dramatic change affecting all specs in the game, we have Hero talents that you have two to choose from; Deathstalker and Fatebound.
Starting off with Deathstalker we receive Deathstalker’s Mark as our hallmark talent, which we can apply 3 stacks of this debuff on a target after using Ambush. Upon using a finisher on the target that is affected by Deathstalker’s Mark, we consume one stack to deal some on-demand damage and empower our next Ambush or Mutilate by 50%. This isn’t too exciting as Mutilate is quite marginal in terms of its damage, but may be beneficial during setups where you are sending Vanish to deliver some solid Single Target burst with Ambush.
Next up we have Fatebound, and instead of having it change our current playstyle and rotation, this actually enhances how we already deliver damage. What really makes this build work is our hallmark talent, Hand of Fate, which flips a coin after doing a finisher. Depending on which side it lands on you can deal some direct damage or receive a 10% damage buff for 15 seconds. However, this is quite RNG in it’s playstyle as each consecutive time it flips on the same side these bonuses ramp up in effectiveness.
Overall, the true essence of Assassination Rogue is still prevalent in its current age, as its rotation still revolves around cleaving and making the most use out of our bleeds, while also having some single target burst and setups to make ourselves feel a bit in tune with our class identity.
