The War Within expands our arsenal of talent options, which include our new talent hero talent trees, Hellcaller and Diabolist. Since Diabolist is a bit lackluster and weaker damage-wise at its current state, we will only discuss our suggested default loadout for Hellcaller.

Hero Talents: Hellcaller

Starting off, we have our default Hellcaller build. Most of the hero talents we receive here focus around buffing our hallmark talent, Wither, which replaces Immolate. Not to mention, it is now instant cast, allowing us to benefit off talents like Ashen Remains and Flashpoint more efficiently without having to cast.

Now, it’s important to understand some of our new Hero talents in order to optimize your gameplay.

  • Wither, as mentioned previously, is what this build solely focuses on. This replaces your Immolate as a more enhanced version, which now stacks on all affected targets when we spend a Soul Shard on a damaging spell due to Blackened Soul.
  • Malevolence is your 1 minute burst cooldown, dealing some direct damage on targets affected by Wither the moment this cooldown is used, while increasing Wither‘s stack count. Also, this increases your Haste by 8%, and allows you to generate an additional stack of Wither every time you spend a Soul Shard.
  • Seeds to Their Demise is our way of executing with Wither, or when Malevolence is active, consuming each stack of Wither on the target every second until 1 stack is left.

Warlock Class Talents

In the Warlock Class talent tree, most of your talent choices will be mandatory when advancing onto each tier. Some of most noteworthy mandatory talents are:

  • Demon Skin, giving us a 0.2% absorb every second, which can stack up to 10%, and some added bonus to our armor. This makes us passively tankier all the time.
  • Dark Pact, acting as our most frequently used defensive cooldown, aside from Demonic Circle: Teleport, providing us with a massive absorb on ourselves, and is the most valuable when dampening is at its lowest.
  • Frequent Donor increases our survivability from the cooldown reduction on Dark Pact, providing us with more uptime on it. This talent is also great against setup compositions, especially into Subtlety Rogues, allowing us to save ourselves quite often.

Another potential flex change involves choosing Mortal Coil or Howl of Terror.

  • Mortal Coil is our preferred default pick, granting us an additional Crowd Control effect on the incapacitate Diminishing Returns category that does not break on damage. Although this spell becomes quite versatile in how you choose to use it, it’s more preferred to use on your kill target, typically out of a stun, to keep the pressure rolling.
  • Howl of Terror becomes more niche than in Dragonflight, as you can’t fear Windwalker Monk‘s images from Storm, Earth, and Fire, and should be picked against Subtlety Rogue based matchups where you want to deny the opposing team’s setups.

There will then be a few points which can be moved around depending on the composition that you are facing.

For your flexible class talents, Fel Domination can be more swapped around with other talents offered to us. This is dependent on your matchup and current composition played.

  • Amplify Curse can be picked into classes that rely heavily on critting like Windwalker Monks, or casting in order to win the game.
  • Nightmare to make sure our Fear does not break as easily from our dots.
  • Darkfury if you need more uptime on Shadowfury to disrupt your opponents, and for it to possibly hit more targets as this increases its radius.

Destruction Spec Talents

For our spec talents, most of these will be mandatory as you advance onto each tier. Some of the most noteworthy talents are:

However, we do have some flexible talents worth discussing about that could help you improve how you optimize your build. This is dependent on the matchup at hand as well as the composition you’re playing as.

First up, we have a selection between Crashing Chaos and Rain of Chaos in its choice node.

Next we have another selection between Havoc or Mayhem. Both of these options are viable, but Havoc is considered the more preferred pick due to its consistent benefits.

  • Havoc is the more preferred pick as you can apply this directly to the target you want it to duplicate your damaging spells on at reduced effectiveness.
  • Mayhem is considered when playing comps that aren’t too reliant on setups and are constantly trying to dish out the most damage possible. This would mainly be for Shadow Priests or Unholy Death Knights that are constantly padding to top the meters in order to win the game.

Destruction Warlock PvP Talents

Regardless of what Hero build you choose, your default PvP talents are:

  • Fel Fissure applies a healing reduction effect underneath your target affected by Chaos Bolt, and reduces their movement speed as long as their character is standing in it.
  • Impish Instincts is more convenient into melees, as this allows you to use Demonic Circle: Teleport more often whenever you are affected by melee attacks.
  • Nether Ward allows you to reflect any incoming spell back to the original caster, and is super useful against caster comps to change the direction of the game into your favor.

In most situations, you will be swapping to/from any of our default talents, depending on the matchup at hand, the composition you’re playing as, and which talents are required to some of these optional talents:

  • Observer instead of Impish Instincts against double caster compositions for more throughput.
  • Gateway Mastery when playing on larger maps, especially Tol’viron Arena.
  • Soul Rip against setup compositions, primarily against Jungle Cleave to reduce damage we take and healing they take while active. This typically involves removing Nether Ward to reap its benefits.
