Why Affliction Warlock?
Affliction Warlock is an exceptional caster specialization, noticeably unrivaled from its caster competitors. The sustain damage that this specialization provides is extremely strong, but provides minimal single target damage due the amount of spread pressure it offers. Affliction Warlock is also valuable due to its curses, instant cast Crowd Control, utility, and defensives.
Starting with curses, Affliction Warlocks have Curse of Weakness, Curse of the Elements, and Curse of Tongues. All three curses have valuable effects, making it important to maintain these curses on as many targets as possible. Make sure to prioritize using Curse of the Elements on the primary kill targets, as this will provide additional damage on the target. Affliction Warlock typically apply Curse of Tongues on enemy casters to increase the cast time of their spells. Lastly, Curse of Weakness is applied to reduce the amount of damage a melee target does. This is used primarily when melee targets press major offensives.
Next, Affliction Warlock is provided with two instant cast Crowd Control spells in their arsenal. This involves the spells, Howl of Terror and Death Coil, which present Warlocks with the ability to immediately initiate a Crowd Control chain or to follow up on spells, such as Kidney Shot or Fear, to guarantee a kill. With the ability to have multiple Crowd Control applied on an enemy, Warlocks are given the option to use Spell Lock on a target depending on their pet’s location and Line of Sight. This makes it difficult to Crowd Control a team if they have Warlock in their composition.
Followed by their instant cast Crowd Control is the diverse amount of control and utility Warlocks present. Shadowflame, Demonic Circle, Fear, and Purge, are all valuable spells given to Affliction Warlocks. Shadowflame’s primary uses in arena involves slowing your opponent’s movement speed to assist with kiting or to increase uptime on opponents. Demonic Circle is a unique ability given to Warlocks, and can be used offensively and defensively. Using this spell offensively can help score kills or initiate Crowd Control, or can be a defensive play to avoid your enemies. Lastly, Devour Magic is Warlock’s purge effect from your Felhunter, allowing you to purge major cooldown buffs, especially Icy Veins or Avenging Wrath.
Lastly, Affliction Warlocks have powerful defensives, such as Soul Link, Demon Armor, Fel Armor, Drain Life, Shadow Ward, Healthstone, and Demonic Circle: Teleport, allowing them to sustain damage better than most casters. Demon Armor is one of your strongest defensive passives, which increases your armor and increases your healing effects from Siphon Life and Drain Life. This is typically paired with the Demonic Aegis talent for additional Healing from their spells. Specializations Affliction Warlocks typically play with are Subtlety Rogue, Fire Mage, Frost Mage, Shadow Priest, and Death Knight. Their preferred healers are Holy Paladin or Restoration Shaman.
